Besser Company and DeVere Construction Form Joint Venture Two Alpena, Michigan based companies are working together on the turn-key construction of a new concrete products production facility in Richmond, Virginia. The project is for Tarmac America one of the largest producers of concrete products in the United States. "Being able to provide all the components for a turn-key project gave Besser Company a competitive edge when negotiating for the contract," stated Kevin Curtis, Besser Company vice president. "We were fortunate to find a local partner, DeVere Construction Company, Inc., with the expertise to handle a project of this magnitude," reported Jeff Wallace, Besser Company director of sales and marketing. According to Dick Crittenden, DeVere Construction Company, Inc. president, "The ability to ‘link up’ and construct the Tarmac America production facility has allowed both DeVere and Besser to expand our market potential. We are looking forward to a long mutually beneficial arrangement with Besser in the development of similar projects." The joint venture calls for DeVere to complete the sitework, earthwork, design and construction of the facilities which will house the complete Besser equipped concrete products production facility. Besser is supplying a complete plant, featuring a Superpac® concrete products machine which produces six 8" units per cycle, at a rate of up to 3240 8" units per hour. Additional equipment, essential to the operation of the facility is being furnished by Besser divisions. Besser Appco located in San Antonio, Texas is providing the batching while Besser Lithibar in Holland, Michigan is supplying the product handling equipment. The equipment is being installed by American Concrete Equipment of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. The target date for completion of the Tarmac America facility in Kingsland is June 1999. DeVere was created in 1967 as a general and special services contractor. The company with offices in Alpena and Tarpon Springs, Florida performs construction of industrial, municipal, school and institutional projects worldwide. Currently, DeVere has contracts for construction in Michigan, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Utah, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica in addition to the Richmond, Virginia site.
