Governor John Engler, citing the important role manufacturing plays in Michigans economy, signed an Executive Declaration designating 9-15 May as Michigan Manufacturing Week. The Michigan Manufacturers Association (MMA), working with members, including Besser Company, has set up tours at manufacturing sites throughout the state to showcase the variety of careers available. "We are glad to be able to help students learn more about manufacturing and the career opportunities that are available," stated Janet Behnke, Besser safety and training supervisor. Following the MMAs theme, "Journey into Manufacturing," Besser has designated tours and demonstrations for students, educators and counselors in the areas of machine tool trades, welding, drafting and mechanical technology. Allowing visitors to see and ask questions about the various careers that are available in the manufacturing arena is the goal for the event. Several tours will be conducted at Besser on Monday and throughout the week, (Please refer to the schedule which follows). Tour guides will be Besser employees who work in the specified areas. Realizing that many other disciplines contribute to the success of a manufacturing company, specialized sessions on marketing, clerical, computers and foreign language will also be presented. According to data supplied by the Michigan Employment Security Agency, 1997 and compiled by MMA the positive influence of manufacturing is clear:
